For the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Statistics Portugal, the publication Statistics Portugal: former challenges, future challenges brings to public a collection of statements from renowned Portuguese personalities. This commemorative publication provides a study on the statistical production evolution in Portugal and gives a view for the future of statistical information. The present work was led by professors Nuno Valério and Carlos Bastien.

In 2010 Statistics Portugal celebrates 75 years, seeing that it was founded by law in May 1935. However, there are two other relevant celebrations: 100 years over the creation of the Directorate-General of Statistics, the preceding official statistical institution; 200 year over the  foundation of the first statistical official body, known as Statistical Commission and Register of the Kingdom of Portugal. These multiple celebrations encouraged a reflexion over the past, an evaluation of the present situation, as well as a prospective evolvement of official statistics in Portugal, issues that the present study tries to give answer.
