The Anuário Estatístico Norte de Portugal -  Castilla y Léon 1999 (Statistical Yearbook North of Portugal - Castilla and Leon (Spain), 1999) releases a set of statistical indicators at the regional and sub-regional level that allow for the characterisation and comparison of the two countries and of these cross-border regions from the demographic, economic and social point of view.

This initiative of the two countries is a step forward towards integrating these neighbouring regions and bringing them closer, at the same time as it reinforces the notoriety abroad of this integrated area. Statistics Portugal - Regional Directorate of the Norte Region and the Consejería de Economía y Hacienda of the Castile and Leon Junta, through the Directorate General Statistics, continue to jointly release statistical information on the regions of Castile and Leon and the Norte Region, therefore contributing to an increased visibility for both regional areas.
