This paper aims at quantifying the level of economic and social development of the Portuguese mainland regions and municipalities. With this aim, five partial development indexes (demography, health and social security, education and
culture, income, employment and economic activity), supported by factor analysis (principal components analysis), are presented. In addition, a global development index summarising the previous five indexes is also presented. The approach employed to develop the indexes is explained and results are analysed with the
support of maps and tables.
