Family framework of people with disabilities: an exploratory analysis of the results of the 2001 Census
Cristina Gonçalves > Demographic Studies Review > INE, 2003, p. 69 - 94

Summary

The study of people with disabilities and their family framework recently received an important contribution
when the final results of the 2001 Census became available. Taking a first-hand look at these results was the
goal underlying this work.
This article describes people with disabilities according to type of disability and degree of impairment, broken
down by age and sex. It also includes a socio-economic analysis, focusing on the composition of the population
based on marital status, level of education and economic activity. With regard to the family framework, we
have attempted to describe the private households and family nucleus in which these people are integrated,
without forgetting the type and conditions of accommodation in which they live. In this context, reference is
made to access to buildings by people with reduced mobility, an important issue in determining the elimination
of architectural barriers and in improving the quality of life and social integration of people with disabilities.

key-words: disabled persons, disabled types, impairment degrees.
