Summary

In June 2023, 6.4 million passengers and 17.9 thousand tonnes of freight and mail were handled at national airports, corresponding to year-on-year variations of +11.4% and -1.9%, respectively, compared to June 2022. Vis-à-vis June 2019, there were increases of 8.4% and 9.3%, in the same order.

Since the beginning of 2023, there have been monthly historical highs of passengers at national airports. In June 2023, there was a daily average of 107 thousand passengers disembarked at national airports, a value higher than the one registered in June 2022 (95.9 thousand; +11.6%) and 9.1% above the one recorded in June 2019 (98.1 thousand).

In the first half of 2023, the number of passengers increased by 28.4% compared with the first half of 2022, while the movement of freight and mail recorded a slight decrease (-0.8%). Compared with the first half of 2019, there were increases of 12.0% and 9.4%, respectively. 

Considering the volume of passengers disembarked and embarked on international flights in the first semester of 2023, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination of flights, with year-on-year growths of 23.7% in the number of disembarked passengers and 24.9% in the number of embarked passengers, vis-à-vis the first half of 2022. France occupied the second position, with increases of 23.3% and 23.7%, in the same order, followed by Spain, with very significant increases compared to the first half of 2022 (+47.5%, both as a country of origin and as a country of destination of flights).
