2023 preliminary results: guests and overnight stays exceeded 2019 levels and reached new historical highs - December 2023

Summary

The tourist accommodation sector registered 1.8 million guests and 4.0 million overnight stays in December 2023, corresponding to increases of 10.9% and 8.2%, respectively (+9.2% and +7,8% in November 2023, in the same order). Overnight stays from residents grew by 9.3%, totaling 1.6 million, and those from non-residents grew by 7.5%, corresponding to 2.5 million.

The Alentejo and the Centro stood out with the biggest increases in December (+19.3% and +17.6% respectively). The Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira were the only regions to show a decrease in the number of overnight stays in December (-5.7% and -1.0% respectively).

The occupancy rate of tourist accommodation establishments rose in December (+0.9 p.p. for both the net occupancy rate of bed-places and the net occupancy rate of rooms, to 32.1% and 39.2% respectively).

In 2023 (preliminary data), tourist accommodation establishments registered 30.0 million guests and 77.2 million overnight stays, which translated into increases of 13.3% and 10.7%. Overnight stays from non residents predominated (69.7% of total overnight stays in 2023), totaling 53.8 million, and recorded the strongest growth (+14.9%). The domestic market contributed 23.4 million overnight stays (+2.1%). Vis-à-vis 2019, the number of visitors and the number of overnight stays increased by 10.7% and 10.0%, respectively (+10.7% for residents and +9.6% for non-residents).

The United Kingdom remained the main external market in 2023, accounting for 18.4% of overnight stays from non-residents (+9.4%). This was followed by the German (11.3% of the total), Spanish (10.1% share), French and North American markets (8.6% in both). The highest growth rates were recorded by the Canadian and North American markets (+56.9% and +32.9% respectively).
