The tourist accommodation sector registered 2.8 million guests and 7.1 million overnight stays in May 2023, corresponding to increases of 12.1% and 10.0%, respectively (+16.8% and +14.0% in April 2023, in the same order). Compared to May 2019, there were increases of 8.2% in guests and 9.0% in overnight stays.
In May, the domestic market contributed with 1.8 million overnight stays (+0.4%) and external markets totalled 5.4 million (+13.6%). Vis-à-vis May 2019, there were increases of 10.2% in overnight stays from residents and 8.6% from non-residents.
Overnight stays from United Kingdom residents (20.0% of total overnight stays from non-residents in May) increased by 4.0% compared to May 2019. The Spanish market lost representativeness (share of 6.4%), decreasing by 3.0%, having been overtaken by the French market (share of 10.0%), which decreased by 4.6%. The North American and Canadian markets stood out, having the largest increases, both compared to May 2019 (+67.2% and +62.2%, respectively) and to May 2022 (+34.6% and +66.3%, in the same order).
Compared to May 2019, overnight stays by residents increased in all regions, except in Algarve (-1.5%). RA Madeira stood out with a 47.5% growth. Overnight stays by non-residents decreased in Algarve (-0.6%) and Centro (-0.5%), with the highest growth in the Norte (+26.5%), RA Açores (+21.4%) and RA Madeira (+18.0%).
The net bed occupancy rate in tourist accommodation establishments (49.9%) increased by 1.7 p.p. in May (50.9%, +3.4 p.p. in April). The net bedroom occupancy rate (61.9%) increased by 3.1 p.p. (60.2%, +4.3 p.p. in April). Vis-à-vis May 2019, there was a decrease of 0.1 p.p. in the net bed occupancy rate and an increase of 2.3 p.p. in the net room occupancy rate.
In the first five months of 2023, overnight stays increased by 23.9%, +12.7% in residents and +29.3% in non-residents. Compared to the same period of 2019, overnight stays grew by 12.8%, +17.4% in residents and +10.9% in non-residents.
In May, 17.9% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not register guests (20.6% in April).
