News related to the bird flu virus in recent months supported an environment which had as a result a shrinkage in demand for poultry meat, leading to a fall in sales and prices. In October, the Producer Price Index posted a decline of 30% in live poultry from the same month of 2004.
The clean weight of fallen stock approved for consumption rose by 8.9% in October from the same month of the previous year, with an increase in the slaughtering of all species other than goat.
