Demographic Statistics - 2022
Issue year: 2023

Summary

This edition of the Demographic Statistics yearbook presents the demographic situation of the resident population in Portugal in 2022: volume and age structure, natural and migratory growth, live births and fertility, mortality and life expectancy, family formation and dissolution (marriages and divorces), international migrations, foreign population residing or staying in Portugal with legal status, and acquisition and attribution of Portuguese citizenship.

Long series of the main demographic indicators with decennial information are available for the period from 1900 to 1980 and annual information from 1980 to 2022. The information released on the resident population is part of the Definitive Estimates of Resident Population - 2011-2020 series, revised based on the final results of the 2021 Census, which corrects the previous series of Provisional Estimates of Resident Population  - 2011- 2020 (2011 Census based), as well as the series of the Provisional Estimates of Resident Population based on the 2021 Census, which begins in 2021 and is provisional until the next Census.

The published data are generally disaggregated to the first and second levels of the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS 1 and NUTS 2) for the period 2017 to 2022. Accompanying each figure there are hyperlinks to the data published in Products | Database, with a higher geographic and temporal detail.
