This statistical study aims to contribute to the understanding of the characteristics and territorial dynamics of metropolitan areas, by focusing on the contrasts between the several subspaces of the Metropolitan Area of Lisboa and of the Metropolitan Area of Porto. A socioeconomic typology for the two metropolitan areas is presented, based on statistical data resulting from the Population and Housing Census, available at the statistical subsection level, and multivariate data analysis techniques.
