The tourist accommodation sector registered 1.9 million guests and 4.2 million overnight stays in December 2024, corresponding to variations of +3.6% and +2.9%, respectively (+14.0% and +9.6% in November 2024, in the same order). Overnight stays by residents rose by 0.6% (+22.2% in November) to 1.6 million, while those by non-residents increased by 4.4% (the same growth as in November) to 2.6 million.
In external markets, the British kept leading (13.7% share), although it recorded a slight decrease (-0.2%), followed by Spain (13.2% share), which fell by 10.0%. Among the top 10 inbound markets in December, the Polish market stood out once again for recording the highest increase (+13.9%).
RA Madeira and RA Açores recorded the largest growth in the number of overnight stays (+8.8% and +4.4% respectively). Conversely, Oeste e Vale do Tejo and Centro were the only regions to register decreases (-3.0% and -0.3% respectively).
Occupancy in tourist accommodation establishments reached 32.2% and 39.2 in December, respectively, in net bed and room occupancy rates (-0.1 p.p. and -0.2 p.p., in the same order).
In 2024 (preliminary data), tourist accommodation establishments recorded 31.6 million guests and 80.3 million overnight stays, reflecting annual increases of 5.2% and 4.0%, respectively. Overnight stays by non-residents dominated (70.3% of total overnight stays in 2024), totaling 56.4 million and growing by 4.8%. The domestic market contributed with 23.9 million overnight stays (+2.4%).
The United Kingdom remained the leading inbound market in 2024, accounting for 18.1% of non-resident overnight stays (+2.7%). It was followed by German (11.3% of the total), Spanish (9.7% share), North American (9.2%) and French (8.0%) markets. Among the top 10 inbound markets in 2024, the largest increases were recorded by the Canadian and North American markets (+17.1% and +12.1% respectively).
