The tourist accommodation sector registered 3.0 million guests and 7.8 million overnight stays in June 2024, corresponding to variations of +6.7% and +4.8%, respectively (+9.5% and +7.6% in May 2024, in the same order). Residents’ overnight stays grew by 3.2% to 2.2 million, while those spent by non-residents increased by 5.5%, totaling 5.6 million.
In external markets, the British kept being the main one (share of 20.8%), having registered an increase of 5.5% in June, followed by the United States (share of 10.6%), which grew by 13.7%, and Germany (10.6%), which fell slightly (-0.4%).
All regions recorded an increase in overnight stays, with the biggest increases in Península de Setúbal (+9.1%) and RA Açores (+7.2%), being more modest in RA Madeira (+3.3%) and Algarve (+3.7%).
Occupancy in tourist accommodation establishments increased in June, to 54.2% and 64.4%, respectively, in net bed and room occupancy rates (+0.8 p.p. in both).
In the second quarter of 2024, overnight stays rose by 2.8% (+7.4% in the 1st quarter), due to non-residents (+4.2%; +8.7% in the 1st quarter), while overnight stays by residents fell by 0,8% (+4.7% in the 1st quarter). In the 1st semester of the year, overnight stays grew by 4.5%, +1.4% for residents and +5.8% for non-residents.
The quarterly results were influenced by the moving structure of the calendar, i.e., the effect of the holiday period associated with Easter, which this year was spread between the 1st and 2nd quarters, whereas in the previous year it was concentrated only in the 2nd quarter.
