The tourist accommodation sector registered 3.1 million guests and 7.7 million overnight stays in May 2024, corresponding to variations of +9.4% and +7.5%, respectively (-3.7% and -4.3% in March 2024, in the same order). Overnight stays by residents grew by 7.6% to 1.9 million, while those by non-residents increased by 7.5%, totaling 5.8 million.
In external markets, the British was the main one in May (share of 19.1%), having registered an increase of 2.1%, followed by Germany (share of 11.8%), which grew by 10.0%. The North American market followed in 3rd place (10.1%), with an increase of 17.3%, overtaking the French market (9.2%), one of the few, among the main ones, that fell (-1.8%).
All regions recorded an increase in overnight stays, with the biggest increases in Alentejo (+18.0%) and RA Açores (+17.6%), while the most modest increases were registered in Algarve (+5.2%), RA Madeira (+5.6%) and Grande Lisboa (+5.7%).
Occupancy in tourist accommodation establishments increased in May, to 52.4% and 63.7%, respectively, in net bed and room occupancy rates (+1.8 p.p. and -1.5 p.p. in the same order).
