Movement of passengers at national airports maintains trend of historical highs - September 2023

Summary

In September 2023, 6.7 million passengers and 17.6 thousand tonnes of freight and mail were handled at national airports, corresponding to year-on-year variations of +13.5% and -4.3%, respectively, compared to September 2022. Vis-à-vis September 2019, in the same order, there was an increase of 12.3% and a slight decrease of 0,5%.

Since the beginning of 2023, there have been monthly historical highs of passengers at national airports. In September 2023, there was a daily average of 110.9 thousand passengers disembarked, a higher value than the one registered in September 2022 (97.2 thousand; +14.1%) and 12.9% above the one recorded in September 2019 (98.3 thousand).

Between January and September 2023, the number of passengers increased by 21.8% compared with the same period of 2022, while the movement of freight and mail recorded a decrease (-2.6%). Vis-à-vis the same period of 2019, there were increases of 11.7% and 6.6%, respectively. 

Considering the volume of passengers disembarked and embarked on international flights between January and September 2023, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination of flights, with year-on-year growths of 18.5% in the number of disembarked passengers and 18.8% in the number of embarked passengers, vis-à-vis the same period of 2022. France and Spain ranked second and the third, respectively, both as country of origin and destination of flights.
