The tourist accommodation sector registered 2.9 million guests and 7.4 million overnight stays in October 2023, corresponding to increases of 8.7% and 8.5%, respectively (+9.3% and +6.9% in September 2023, in the same order). External markets continued to ensure the growth in overnight stays, recording an increase of 11.5%, to 5.5 million, while a slight increase (+0.3% to 1.8 million) in residents’ overnight stays occurred.
In external markets, the North American continued to strengthen its weight (share of 9.9%), preceded by the British (20.0%) and German (12.5%) ones. These markets grew by 24.9%, 8.1% and 16.1%, respectively, compared to October 2022.
Increases in overnight stays were recorded in all regions, most significantly in Alentejo (+13.8%), Norte (+11.7%) and Centro (+11.0%).
Occupancy in tourist accommodation establishments increased in October (+1.9 p.p. to 51.0% in the net bed occupancy rate and +1.7 p.p. to 62.4% in the net room occupancy rate).
In October, 19.2% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not register guests (14.4% in September).
