The tourist accommodation sector registered 2.7 million guests and 6.8 million overnight stays in April 2023, corresponding to increases of 16.5% and 13.8%, respectively (+30.7% and +26.8% in March 2023, in the same order). Compared to April 2019, there were increases of 17.5% in guests and 14.3% in overnight stays.

In April, the domestic market contributed 2.0 million overnight stays (+7.3%) and external markets totalled 4.8 million (+16.8%). Vis-à-vis April 2019, there were increases of 21,1% in overnight stays from residents and 11.6% from non-residents. 

Overnight stays from United Kingdom residents (18.1% of total overnight stays from non-residents in April) increased by 9.6% compared to April 2019. The Spanish market (11.9% share) grew by 2.3%, while the German market (11.4% share) decreased by 2.1%. The Canadian market stood out with the highest growth compared to April 2022 (+89.5%).

Compared to April 2019, resident’s overnight stays increased in all regions, with RA Madeira (+105.4%) standing out. The overnight stays by non-residents grew in all regions, but less significantly in Algarve (+1.7%).

The net bed occupancy rate in tourist accommodation establishments (50.8%) increased by 3.3 p.p. in April (39,3%, +5.9 p.p. in March). The net bedroom occupancy rate (59.8%) increased by 3.9 p.p. (50,1%, +8.1 p.p. in March). Vis-à-vis April 2019, there were increases of 2.6 p.p. and 3.8 p.p., respectively. 

In the first four months of 2023, overnight stays increased by 30.0%, +16.7% in residents and +37.1% in non-residents. Compared to the same period of 2019, overnight stays grew by 14.2%, +19.9% in residents and +11.8% in non-residents.

In April, 19.6% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not register guests (29.4% in March).
