In 2022, the value of environmentally related taxes was approximately 4.6 billion euro, representing 5.3% of revenue from taxes and social contributions (6.6% in 2020). That value corresponds to a decrease of 7.5% compared to 2021, whereas total revenue from taxes and social contributions increased by 14.8%.

According to information available for 2021, in Portugal, the share of environmentally related taxes in total revenue from taxes and social contributions was higher (6.6%) than the EU27 average (5.5%).
