Early estimates point to protracted draught situation - July 2005
21 July 2005

Summary
June was characterised by the protracted extreme draught situation in virtually the whole mainland territory. Therefore, and as previously forecast, spring/summer crops declined, unit yield in temporary dry-land farming dropped and some permanent crops faced water shortages, which may affect their production. Animal feeding, in turn, faced broadly based shortages, with growing concerns about the future, since forage stocks are insufficient to ensure livestock needs. Slaughtering of cattle for human consumption increased by 8.1% in May from the same period of the previous year, as a result of the higher volume of beef, sheep and pig slaughter.
