In 2021, 3,650 establishments were classified as Large-sized Commercial Units (UCDR) in Portugal, 0.3% less than the previous year (+1.4% in 2020). Persons employed in those units (121,600 workers) increased by 2.7% ( 5.0% in 2020). Turnover (EUR 20.1 million) grew by 5.0% (-4.4% in 2020) and the number of transactions (904.4 million) rose by 5.6% (-17.4% in 2020).
Compared to 2019, there was a recovery in the number of establishments (+1.1%), turnover (+0.4%) and sales (+0.6%) of these units. However, persons employed and number of transactions still remained, in 2021, under the levels of 2019 (-2.4% and -12.7%, respectively).
In food retail units sales grew by 3.1% (+2.9% in 2020; +6.1% compared to 2019) and in non-food retail units increased by 9.9% (-18.8% in 2020; -10.8% compared to 2019).
Sales of own brand products in the food retail units represented 37.9% of global sales (38.0% in 2020), for a total of EUR 5.4 billion (+2.7%, after +10.6% in 2020; +13.6% compared to 2019).
