Summary

In the 1st quarter 2019, residents in Portugal took a total of 4.7 million trips, corresponding to an increase of 4.4% (+6.3% in the 4thQ 2018). Trips abroad corresponded to 12.3% of the total and grew above domestic trips (+22.4% comparing with +2.3%; +30.8% and +3.6% in the 4thQ 2018). 
“Visit to relatives or friends” remained the main reason to travel in the 1st quarter of 2019 (2.1 million trips, -7.0%), despite the loss of representativeness (44.3% of the total, compared to 49.7% in the same quarter of 2018). The reason “leisure, recreation or holidays” corresponded to 1.8 million trips (38.2% of the total, +3.9 p.p.), showing a growth of 16.2%.
“Hotels and similar establishments” accounted for 24.9% of overnight stays resulting from tourism trips in the 1st quarter 2019, reinforcing their representativeness (+3.7 p.p.). “Free private accommodation” remained the main accommodation option (68.4% of overnight stays), despite the reduction in their weight (-2.0 p.p.).
