Summary
The malignant neoplasms and the diseases of the circulatory system were at the origin of more than half of deaths registered in the country in 2013, respectively 24.3% and 29.5%, with a decrease of 4.1% in the proportion of deaths due to the diseases of the circulatory system deaths and an increase of 0.6% in the proportion of deaths due to malignant neoplasms.
Deaths caused by cerebrovascular diseases showed up in the context of the diseases of the circulatory system, accounting for 11.5% of all deaths in the country (12 273 deaths).
In 2013, the 4 010 deaths caused by malignant neoplasms of the trachea, bronchus and lung, with an increase of 9.1% when compared to 2012, and those caused by malignant neoplasms of the colon, rectum and anus with 3.6% of deaths (3 848 deaths) stood out among the deaths due to malignant neoplasms.
Also relevant were deaths caused by the diseases of the respiratory system, accounting for 11.8% of all deaths occurred in 2013, with a decrease of 9.2% vis-à-vis 2012.
Among the endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases, diabetes mellitus showed up with the largest number of deaths (4 548), despite the decrease over the previous year (-6.7%).
