06 November 2014
According to the results of the Inquérito à Utilização de Tecnologias da Informação e da Comunicação pelas Famílias collected in 2014, 63% of the households in Portugal have a broadband connection to the internet at home, with a scope of 72% in the region of Lisboa and 87% among the households with children aged less than 16 years old. Nevertheless the increase registered in the broadband connection indicator in recent years, the outcome is not enough to reduce the gap to the EU-28 average.
In 2014, 65% of people with 16 to 74 years old connect to the internet, and 17% buy or order goods or services through this network. The highest proportion of internet users is within the 16 to 24 years of age, while this proportion decreases with the increase of age. Concerning the e-commerce, the highest proportion of users (33%) is within people aged from 25 to 24 years old. In Portugal, the use of the internet to place orders is over 20 p.p. lower to the EU-28 average.
Among the internet users, in 2014 more than half (57%) connects to the internet on the move (away from home or work), using a mobile phone, smartphone, portable computer or other portable device. This type of connection increased 19 p.p. during the last year, currently reaching a proportion similar to the 2013 EU-28 average.
As for people that had connected to the internet during the first 3 months of 2014, 26% used storage space in this network to save or share files (cloud computing), while only 7% of cloud computing users reported to have paid for the service. The main reasons for the the use of cloud computing services concern the possibilities of using the files from several devices or locations (91%) and share files easily (89%).
