Following EU regulations, Statistics Portugal presents the first notification for 2025 of the Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP) to be sent to Eurostat before the end of the month. According to these provisional results, the General Government (GG) had a positive balance, in 2024, amounting to EUR 1 994.2 million, corresponding to 0.7% of GDP (1.2% in 2023). Gross debt of GG attained 94.9% of GDP (97.7% of GDP in 2023).
GG Total revenue amounted to EUR 124 billion, increasing by 6.3% vis-à-vis 2023 (+ EUR 7.4 billion), mainly as a consequence of the growth of current revenue (a 7.0% growth, EUR 7.9 billion more than in 2023).
In the same period, GG total expenditure increased by 7.6% (in EUR 8.6 billion), to EUR 122 billion, with current expenditure increasing 9.1%, by EUR 9.3 billion, as a result of rises in compensation of employees (with a rate of change of 8.5%) and in interest payments, which grew 6.3%. Capital expenditure decreased 7.1%, corresponding to EUR 742 million more than in the previous year.
In 2024, total tax revenue increased by 6.7% in nominal terms, attaining EUR 101.8 billion. The tax burden indicator, that corresponds to the ratio between fiscal revenue and GDP, was 35.7% in 2024 (35.6% in the previous year).
