In 2025, Statistics Portugal republishes a statistical study on road traffic of the national stock of vehicles carried out for the first time last year. The new estimations include provisional data for 2024, an estimate for 2015 and a revision to the series due to improvements in the estimation process.

Additionally, it is presented a study on vehicle-km in motorways in 2024 based on traffic counters available on these roads and on the distance between junctions.

In 2024, it is estimated that 79.7 billion vehicle-km (vkm) were travelled by the national stock of vehicles 

(+1,0% compared with 2023; +10.2% compared with 2015, first year of the series). Light passenger vehicles represented 75.4% of total traffic (+0.9 p.p.) while light goods vehicles amounted to 18.2% (-0.4 p.p.). Diesel vehicles (all types of vehicles) represented 71.0% (-2.1 p.p.) of the total vehicle-km and gasoline vehicles stand for 20.8% (+0.3 p.p.).

In 2024, it is estimated that 842.9 million vehicle-km were travelled in the Portuguese motorways.
