Summary
In Portugal – Mainland - 470 kg of municipal waste was generated by person, between 2004 and 2009, by year, placing recycling only 46 kg. In 2008 the recycling rate was 12%, tacking in account that in UE this rate was 17%.
The recycling of waste is a management operation that the period under review grew by more on average. The amounts of waste collected selectively multimaterial showed an average growth rate of about 15% per annum between 2004 and 2009, well above that demonstrated for total waste generated.
Paper and cardboard are the primary material placed for recycling. In the same period, Portugal has generated about 172 million tons of waste from business of which about 11% hazardous. Manufacturing Industry and Commerce and Services contributed about two thirds of the total generated waste from business. The waste recovery promoted by manager’s entities of specific flows between 2004 and 2009 raised about 6 million tonnes, with an average annual growth of 18%. The main materials were recycled packages and old vehicles.
