2024 preliminary results, total revenue and revenue from accommodation slowed down, growing by 10.9% - December 2024

Summary

In December 2024, the tourist accommodation sector accounted for 1.9 million guests (+3.6%) and 4.2 million overnight stays (+2.9%), amounting to EUR 313.8 million in total revenue (+9.2%) and EUR 222.5 million in revenue from accommodation (+9.3%).

The revenue per available room (RevPAR) stood at EUR 38.2 (+5.9%) and the average daily rate (ADR) amounted to EUR 97.4 (+6.4%). The ADR reached its highest value in Grande Lisboa (EUR 118.0), followed by RA Madeira (EUR 114.5). 

The municipality of Lisboa accounted for 23.9% of all overnight stays (12.2% of the total number of overnight stays spent by residents and 31.0% of those by non-residents), i.e., increasing by 2.6% (-0.9% regarding residents and +3.4% concerning non-residents). Among the municipalities with the largest number of overnight stays in December, Vila Nova de Gaia (1.7% of the total overnight stays) and Ponta Delgada (1.3% of the total) stood out, by growing the most (+13.3% and +12.0% respectively). 

In the 4th quarter of 2024, overnight stays increased by 4.7% (+3.0% in the 3rd quarter), which translated into increases of 11.7% in total revenue and 12.1% in revenue from accommodation (+8.9% and +9.2% in the 3rd quarter, respectively). This growth was mainly due to the increase of 6.8% in overnight stays by residents, given that those spent by non-residents grew by 3.7%.

In 2024, when considering the whole year, the number of overnight stays grew by 4.0% (+10.7% in 2023), amounting to EUR 80.3 million, originating increases in both revenues – total and from accommodation – of 10.9% (respectively, +20.0% and +21.4%, in 2023). This growth was mainly due to overnight stays spent by non-residents, which grew by 4.8%, while overnight stays by residents increased by 2.4%.

Considering all means of accommodation (tourist accommodation establishments, camping and holiday camps, and youth hostels), there were 34.0 million guests and 88.3 million overnight stays in 2024, mirroring increases of 4.8% and 3.7%, respectively. The number of overnight stays spent by residents increased by 1.8%, while those by non-residents grew by 4.6%.
