Summary

In 2023, the number of establishments classified as Large-sized Commercial Unit (UCDR) in Portugal was 3,692 units, 0.7% more than in the previous year (+0.5% in 2022). The number of persons employed in this universe (125.7 thousand workers) increased by 2.7% (+0.7% in 2022). Turnover and Sales (€24.7 billion and €24.5 billion, respectively) both grew by 11.4% (+10.5% and 10.6% in 2022) and the number of transactions (1.1 billion) rose by 8.6% (+13.7% in 2022). 

In food retail units, sales grew by 14.0% (+8.2% in 2022) and reached €17.5 billion, while in non-food retail units sales increased by 5.4% (+16.3% in 2022) and stood at €7.1 billion. 

The sales of own-brand products in food retail units (€7.9 billion) continued to increase, reaching 45.2% of global sales in 2023 (39.1% in 2022), the highest proportion since the beginning of the series.
