In 2022, there was 3,668 establishments classified as Large-sized Commercial Unit (UCDR) in Portugal, 0.5% more than the previous year (-0.3% in 2021). Persons employed in those units (122,400 workers) increased 0.7% (+2.7% in 2021). Turnover (22.2 billion euros) grew by 10.5% (+5.0% in 2021) and the number of transactions (1,0 billion) rose 13.7% (+5.6% in 2021).
Compared to 2019, there was an recovery in the number of establishments (+1.6%), turnover (+11.0%) and sales (+11.2%) of these units. However, persons employed and the number of transactions still remained, in 2022, under the levels of 2019 (-1,7% and -0.8%, respectively).
In food retail units sales grew 8.2% (+3.1% in 2021; +14.8% compared to 2019) and in non-food retail units increased 16.3% (+9.9% in 2021; +3.7% compared to 2019).
Sales of own brand products in the food retail units (€6.0 billion) represented 39.1% of global sales of these units in 2022 (37.9% in 2021), the highest proportion since the beginning of the series.
