The tourist accommodation sector registered 2.9 million guests and 7.4 million overnight stays in June 2023, corresponding to increases of 7.1% and 3.7%, respectively (+12.2% and +9.9% in May 2023, in the same order). Compared to June 2019, there were increases of 4.3% in guests and 3.8% in overnight stays.
In June, overnight stays in the domestic market decreased by 6.7%, totalling 2.2 million, and the external markets increased by 8.7%, corresponding to 5.3 million overnight stays. Vis-à-vis June 2019, there were increases of 0.5% in overnight stays from residents and 5.2% from non-residents.
The North American and Canadian markets kept standing out with the largest increases, both compared to June 2019 (+60.3% and +39.7%, respectively) and to the same month in 2022 (+22.2% and +36.2%, in the same order).
Compared to June 2019, overnight stays continued to decrease in the Algarve (-6.8%, -0,9% in May). The highest increases, compared to June 2019, occurred in the Norte (+17.1%), RA Açores (+16.7%) and RA Madeira (+14.3%).
The net bed occupancy rate in tourist accommodation establishments (53.0%) decreased by 0.6 p.p. in June (+1.9 p.p. in May). The net bedroom occupancy rate (63.5%) maintained the same level as in 2022 (+3.3 p.p. in May). Compared to June 2019, there were decreases of 2.2 p.p. and 0.2 p.p., respectively, these being the first decreases since September 2022, vis-à-vis the 2019 levels.
In the first half of 2023, overnight stays increased by 18.8%, +7.7% in residents and +24.2% in non-residents. Compared to the same period of 2019, overnight stays grew by 10.7%, +13.2% in residents and +9.6% in non residents.
In the 2nd quarter of 2023, overnight stays increased by 8.9% (+8.7% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2019). Overnight stays from residents decreased by 0.2% (+9.4% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2019) and those from non-residents grew by 12.9% (+8.4% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2019).
In June, 14.7% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not register guests (19.0% in May).
