Passenger transport maintains growth trend - 1st Quarter 2023

Summary

In the 1st quarter of 2023, national airports handled 12.9 million passengers, corresponding to an increase of 54.3% compared to the same period of 2022, surpassing pre-pandemic values (+15.1% vis-à-vis Q1 2019).

In the same quarter of 2023, 44.3 million passengers were transported by train and 64.6 million by metro (+18.0% and +39.7%, respectively, compared to Q1 2022). Compared to Q1 2019, there were increases of 19.3% and 3.7%, respectively.

In the 1st quarter of 2023, the transport of passengers by inland waterways increased by 32.4% compared to Q1 2022, reaching 4.8 million passengers, and decreased by 1.6% compared to Q1 2019.

Regarding freight transport, there were decreases by air (-0.2%), by sea (-4.5%) and by road (-7.3%), with only a slight increase by rail (+0.7%). Compared to Q1 2019, only freight transport by air increased (+11.8%), with all other modes showing decreases (-8.7%, -12.3% and -3.1%, in the same order).
