Summary

In 2022, the Distribuitive Trade sector was compound by 217.2 thousand enterprises and 825.7 thousand persons employed (+3.4%; -0.01% in 2021), having realized a Turnover of EUR 186.1 billion (+17.9%; +12.2% in 2021). The Gross Value Added stood at EUR 24.4 billion (+13.5%; +13.8% in 2021), global commercial margin at EUR 33.2 billion (+15.2%; +11.8% in 2021) and commercial margin per company at EUR 153 thousand (+14.5%; +11.4 in 2021). 

Compared to 2019, and in nominal terms, trade enterprises recorded significant increases in the main economic indicators: +23.3% in Turnover; +23.0% in Gross Value Added; +22.5% in the Global commercial margin; and +23.2% in margin per company, despite the slight decrease in the number of enterprises (-0.6%) and contained increase in the persons employed (+2.1%). 

In 2022, Automotive trade enterprises recorded a Turnover increase of 14.5% (+9.9% in 2021). Global commercial margin and margin per company increased by 19.3% and 16.7%, respectively (+11.1% and +9.7% in 2021, in the same order). Persons employed increased by 2.8% (-0.5% in 2021). 

In Wholesale activity, the Turnover grew 20.0% in 2022 (+15.0% in 2021), with global commercial margin increasing by 12.0% (14.2% in 2021) such as commercial margin per company (+11.5%; +13.7% in 2021) and persons employed increased by 2.6% (-0.03% in 2021). 

In 2022, Retail trade increased by 16.3% in the Turnover (+9.4% in 2021), by 17.8% in the global commercial margin (+9.5% in 2021) and by 17.4% in the margin per company (+9.5% in 2021). In the number of persons employed the increase was less expressive (+3.9%, after +0.1% in 2021). 

In 2022, enterprises with Large-sized Commercial Units establishments accounted for 42.8% of Turnover (45.1% in 2021) and 31.4% of Persons Employed (32.8% in 2021) of retail activities that they belong, although they covered only 0.4% of the number of companies (0.5% in 2021).
