Draught causes serious losses in winter cereals and broadly based decline in spring crops - June 2005
22 June 2005

Summary
May was characterised by the protracted draught situation, with very serious effects on agriculture. Falls in winter cereals yield will reach around 70% vis-à-vis 2004, thus anticipating one of the worst seasons in the last decades. Some harvest-fields which did not justify their harvest were left to pasturing as feed supplement in a year of extreme forage shortage. Surface cultivated with spring crops was significantly reduced, influenced by the draught situation, in the case of maize, and by the introduction of the Single Payment Scheme.
