The tourist accommodation sector registered 853.2 thousand guests and 2.0 million overnight stays in January 2022, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of +183.7% and +185.9%, respectively, higher than those recorded last December, +148.9% and +169.7%, in the same order. The levels reached in January 2022 were lower than those observed in January 2020, when there were still no effects of the pandemic, having decreased the number of guests and overnight stays by 39.9% and 38.8%, respectively.

In January, the domestic market contributed with 857.7 thousand overnight stays (+104.5%) and the external markets totalled 1.1 million (+308.7%). Compared to January 2020, there were decreases both in overnight stays from residents (-20.1%) and in those from non-residents (-47.9%).

In January, 41.0% of the tourist accommodation establishments were closed or had no movement of guests (37.0% in December).
