MARCH 2022 19 MONTHLY STATISTICAL BULLETIN The transport of passengers increased in the last quarter, but the annual results for 2021 are still far from those of 2019 In the 4th quarter of 2021: • National airports handled 9.8 million passengers (+212.9% compared to the same quarter of 2020 and -26.9% compared to the same period of 2019); • 39.8 million passengers were carried by train and 48.6 million by light railway systems, corresponding to increases of 40.6% and 44.9%, respectively, compared to the 4th quarter of 2020, and reductions of 18.9% and 35.1%, in the same order, compared to the same period in 2019; • Inland waterway passenger transport amounted to 3.8 million, i.e., an increase of 37.2% compared to the same period in 2020 (+6.5% in the 3rd quarter of 2021) and a reduction of 29.2% compared to the 4th quarter of 2019; • Concerning the transport of goods: » By air, there was a 31.5% increase compared to the 4th quarter of 2020 (lower, therefore, than the year-on-year rates of change registered in the two previous quarters: +52.5% in the 3rd and +108.3% in the 2nd), but still below (-7.0%) the value observed in the same period of 2019; » By rail, there were increases of 17.5% compared to the same period in 2020 (+16.5% in the 3rd quarter of 2021) and 3.9% compared to the same period in 2019; » By sea, there was a 1.2% decrease compared to the 4th quarter of 2020 (+0.7% in the 3rd quarter of 2021), and there was also a reduction compared to the 4th quarter of 2019 (-3.6%); » Road freight recorded a slight year-on-year increase (+1.2%) compared to the 4th quarter of 2020, a follow up of what occurred in the previous quarter (+1.6%).
