Monthly Statistical Bulletin, May 2022

MAY 2022 53 Concerning national production, agricultural forecasts for 2022 indicate that productivity has decreased by 10% compared to 2021. The current campaign is also marked by the significant increase in the price of means of production which, together with adverse weather conditions, contributed to the reduction of the installed area by 8%. Based on already known international trade in goods data for the 1st quarter of 2022 and assuming that: • Domestic consumption will be equivalent to that in 2021; • The export price of wheat from the port of Rouen will remain, until the end of 2022, at the level recorded on 18 May 2022 (€443 per tonne). It can be estimated that in 2022, the Portuguese trade balance in wheat will worsen by nearly 60% compared to 2021. If this estimate is confirmed, the corresponding impact on the overall deficit would translate into an inter-annual worsening of about 1%.
