2022 Edition 32 Overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments, by NUTS II region – December 2021 In 2021 as a whole (preliminary data), there were: • 14.5 million guests (+39.4% compared with the previous year); • 37.5million overnight stays (+45.2%vis-à-vis the previous year). In 2021, all regions recorded year-on-year increases in the number of overnight stays in 2021, more so: • Região Autónoma dos Açores (+118.6%); • Região Autónoma da Madeira (+79.8%). 0 200,000 400,000 600,000 RA Madeira RA Açores Algarve Alentejo AM Lisboa Centro Norte Non-residents Residents No. • All NUTS II regions recorded year-on-year increases in the number of overnight stays, with Área Metropolitana de Lisboa accounting for 30.3% of the total, followed by Norte (19.8%), RA Madeira (15.3%), and Algarve (14.7%). There were generalised increases in overnight stays of residents, especially in RA Madeira (+111.3%) and RA Açores (+99.1%), and also in overnight stays of non-residents (with the highest increase in RA Açores: +164.3%). Excluding 2020, one has to go back to 2010 to find a lower number of overnight stays: 37.4 million. In 2021, the period August to October registered the highest number of overnight stays (49.6%of the total overnight stays), contrary to the usual seasonal pattern: higher incidence in the summer months (July to September). In 2021, when compared with 2019: • The number of guests decreased by 46.4%; • The number of overnight stays declined by 46.6% (-10.9% concerning residents and -62.0% regarding non-residents); • There were decreases in overnight stays in all regions, mainly due to the reductions in the number of overnight stays of non-residents, although there were increases in overnight stays of residents in RA Madeira (+19.2%) and Algarve (+5.1%).
