FEBRUARY 2022 31 MONTHLY STATISTICAL BULLETIN The COVID-19 pandemic affected not only the intensity of tourism, but also its seasonality Guests and overnight stays In December 2021: • The tourist accommodation sector1 accounted for: » 1.1 million guests, i.e., an increase of 150.0% in year-on-year terms (+265.0% in November 2021); » 2.6 million overnight stays, which corresponds to a year-on-year increase of 170.4% (+287.2% in the previous month); • Yet, the number of guests and overnight stays recorded was even lower than those observed in December 2019: -28.9% concerning guests and -26.7% regarding overnight stays; • The domestic market contributed 1.1 million overnight stays and grew by 92.6% year-on-year; • The external markets, with 2.3 million overnight stays, registered a year-on-year increase of 292.5%; • When compared to December 2019, there were decreases in overnight stays of both residents (12.2%) and non-residents (34.9%); 1 Includes three types of accommodation facilities: hotel establishments (hotels, apartment hotels, tourist apartments, tourist villages, pousadas and quintas da Madeira), local accommodation with 10 or more beds (according to the statistical threshold defined by EU Regulation 692/2011) and rural/lodging tourist.
