About the European Statistics Day
The 20th of October was designated the World Statistics Day by the United Nations General Assembly in 2010. It is celebrated worldwide every 5 years.
The European statistical community celebrates the European Statistics Day annually, at the initiative of the European Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC) with the support of the European Statistical System, of the European System of Central Banks and of the Federation of European National Statistical Societies.
Under the motto of the 2015 World Statistics Day “Better Data, Better Lives”, the European Statistics Day aims at raising awareness of citizens to the importance of official statistics for evidence-based decision-making by governments, organisations and individuals.
The 1st edition of the European Statistics Day was launched on 20 October 2016, during the 2nd Conference of European Statistics Stakeholders, in Budapest.
This year Lisbon welcomes the Conference entitled “The Value of Official Statistics as a Public Good”, co-organised by ESAC, Statistics Portugal and the Portuguese Statistical Society and sponsored by Eurostat.
With this initiative we intend to bring together producers and users of official statistics and to promote an open debate among all stakeholders, aiming at better addressing the users´ needs and to strengthening the understanding of official statistics as a public good.
Sobre o Dia Europeu da Estatística
A Assembleia Geral das Nações Unidas declarou, em 2010, o dia 20 de outubro como o Dia Mundial da Estatística. Celebrado pela 1ª vez nesse ano, passou a ser assinalado a cada 5 anos.
A comunidade estatística europeia celebra o Dia Europeu da Estatística anualmente, nos anos intercalares ao Dia Mundial da Estatística, numa iniciativa do Comité Consultivo Europeu da Estatística, com o apoio do Sistema Estatístico Europeu, do Sistema Europeu de Bancos Centrais e da Federação Europeia das Sociedades Nacionais de Estatística.
Sob o lema do Dia Mundial da Estatística, de 2015, “Melhores Dados, Melhores Vidas”, o Dia Europeu da Estatística visa sensibilizar os cidadãos para a importância das estatísticas oficiais na tomada de decisões fundamentadas, por parte de Governos e empresas, bem como pela sociedade em geral.
O Dia Europeu da Estatística foi oficialmente assinalado em 2016, durante a “2nd Conference of European Statistics Stakeholders”, realizada em Budapeste.
Em 2017, Lisboa acolhe a Conferência sobre “Estatísticas Oficiais, um Bem Público”, numa organização conjunta do Comité Consultivo Europeu da Estatística, do Instituto Nacional de Estatística e da Sociedade Portuguesa de Estatística, com o apoio do Eurostat.
Esta iniciativa pretende reunir produtores e utilizadores das estatísticas oficiais, promovendo um amplo debate com vista a satisfazer cada vez melhor as necessidades da sociedade, bem como a potenciar o reconhecimento do valor das estatísticas oficiais como um bem público.
