About Lisbon

Lisboa is the Portuguese capital since the mid-13th century, which makes it one of the oldest in the world.

The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate and is a potpourri of character and charm, where 20 centuries of history and cultural influences mingle with modern trends and lifestyles.

Legend tells that it was founded by Ulysses. Most likely it was founded by the Phoenicians; the name comes from “Olissipo”, which has its origins in the Phoenician words “Allis Ubbo”, meaning “enchanting port”.

Lisboa has a population of just over half a million (about 2.8 million when the entire metropolitan area is considered) and is the most important touristic centre in the country.

Which distinctive features characterise Lisboa? Countless, but we may refer the “white” light, the seven hills and their views, the presence of the river, the trams and elevators, the ancient neighbourhoods, the monuments, wonderful food and Fado singing, distinguished by UNESCO as “World Immaterial Heritage and Patrimony”, in 2011.
