E NTERPRISES WITH ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION ACTIVITIES

In 2010 the business commitment with environment protection and pollution control and abatement related to their activities generated an amount of EUR 164 million invested in equipments, a total of EURO 239 million of current expenditure and 109 millions of revenues.

All large enterprises with 1000 or more employees adopted measures for environment protection, in contrast medium and small enterprises (less than 100 employees) from which only 18% of enterprises with less than 49 employees and 55% of enterprises with 50 up to 99 employees developed some sort of activities in order to prevent pollution and protect the environment.

In 2010 only 10% of the enterprises obtained environmental certification, in particular the refineries sector (100%), transport materials manufacture (22%), basic metals and chemicals and pharmaceuticals (both with 18%).

E NVIRONMENTAL GOODS AND SERVICES INDUSTRY

The environmental goods and services industry closed the year 2010 with a turnover around EUR 5.2 million Euros which corresponds to more 16% than the value in the previous year.

More than half of the turnover was generated by the “pollution management” subgroup which contributed to near EUR 2.8 million revealing the importance of such business area in the overall sector. O THER ORGANIZATIONS WITH ACTIVITIES RELATED TO ENVIRONMENT

The activities developed by Non Government Organizations on environment declined on average 10% over the last two years plunging to 11 400 actions.

More than 2/3 of the activities under “protection of landscape and biodiversity” domain and 2/5 of “protection of air and climate” focus on environmental education.

When comparing 2010 and 2009, the total investment doubled while the current expenditure (EUR 24 millions) and revenues (EUR 23 millions) increased by 20% and 40% respectively.

The Fire Fighters Corps registered a total of 16 890 actions or interventions in 2010 evolving at an average rate of 14% per year during the period.

From 2006 to 2010 the number of patrols for forest fires prevention and activities for environment protection, carried out by the Service for Protection of Nature and Environment declined at a rate of 28% and 37% respectively.

E NVIRONMENT RELATED EMPLOYMENT

In 2010 the enterprises involved 14 034 employees on operating and managing activities for pollution abatement and control, from which 14% occupied more than half of the working time in such activities.

The goods and services industry enterprises employed 32 066 persons on tasks specifically oriented to environment, from which 92% occupied the major part of the work time on such activities.

The volunteers collaboration over NGO for Environment actions comprehend the majority of the individuals working in such organizations.

In 2010 the number of professional (full time) fire fighters (excluding volunteers) summed up 30 298 individuals.

Between 2006 and 2010 the number of persons as forest sapper raised 14% every year on an annual and average basis.

The number of persons placed in the Service for Protection of Environment and Nature raised from 875 in 2006 up to 1004 in 2010, corresponding to an annual growth rate of 15%.
