MAY 2022 41 Freight/mail handled at national airports Movement of passengers at national airports In the 1st quarter of 2022: • The number of passengers handled in airports (8.3 million) increased by 465.7% year-on-year (-11.9% vis-à-vis the same period of 2020), getting closer to pre-pandemic levels; • The Lisboa airport handled 54.2% of all passengers (4.5 million), growing by 508.7% vis-à-vis the 1st quarter of 2021 (-16.5% when compared with the same period of 2020, and -27.8% with that of 2019); • France remained the main country of origin and destination: 607.2 thousand passengers disembarked and 605.3 thousand embarked (i.e., year-on-year increases of 408.0% and 307.6% respectively). The United Kingdom ranked second (492.8 thousand disembarked passengers and 488.3 thousand embarked). The UK was not one of the first five main countries in the same period of 2021. Spain ranked third considering the number of passengers (398.0 thousand and 388.7 thousand respectively), registering the highest year-on-year rates of change: 990.7% and 776.3%, respectively.
