2022 Edition 36 MONTHLY STATISTICAL BULLETIN Record olive oil production in 2021 contrasts with drought scenario and rising farm input prices Agricultural forecasts, as of 31 January, indicate that in 2021 the highest olive oil production ever will be reached: 2.25 million hectolitres. 2,250 0 500 1,000 1,500 2,000 2,500 1915 1920 1925 1930 1935 1940 1945 1950 1955 1960 1965 1970 1975 1980 1985 1990 1995 2000 2005 2010 2015 2020 (103 hl) Olive oil production (1915-2021) This outcome resulted from the excellent agrometeorological conditions throughout the campaign and of the deep restructuring of the sector, of which the increasing importance of intensive olive groves stands out. On the other hand, the negative effects of the severe and extreme meteorological drought that, at the end of January, affected 45% of the mainland, mostly penalising: • Livestock production, particularly extensive livestock, due to poor grazing conditions, which force an extraordinary supply of food to these herds; • Cereal farming, both in the decrease in sown area (predictably the lowest in the last hundred years) and the poor vegetative development of rainfed crops.
