2022 Edition 20 MONTHLY STATISTICAL BULLETIN Average monthly gross earnings per employee increased by 1.9% to €1,507 in the 4th quarter of 2021 and by 3.4% to €1,361 in 2021 In the 4th quarter of 2021, compared to the same period in 2020: • Average total gross monthly earnings per employee (per job) increased by 1.9% to €1,507; • The regular gross monthly earnings component (excluding holiday and Christmas allowances) rose by 2.3% to €1,103; • The base gross monthly earnings also rose by 2.3% to €1,036; • In real terms, considering the change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the monthly earnings registered the following year- -on-year rates of change: » Total gross earnings: -0.5%; » Regular gross earnings: -0.1%; » Base gross earnings: zero change. Total average monthly gross earnings per employee Total average monthly gross earnings per employee (year-on-year rate of change) When compared with December 2020: • The largest increases in gross total earnings were observed: » In Agriculture, farming of animals, hunting, and forestry (section A) activities: 8.0%; » In enterprises employing 1 to 4 workers: 6.1%; » In the private sector: 2.8%; » In low-technology manufacturing industries: 4.7%; • The smallest changes in gross total earnings were recorded: » In Transportation and storage activities: -1,5%; » In enterprises with 500 or more employees: -0,9%; » In the General Government sector: 0.0%; » In Market Services: -1.2%. These data relate to about 4.3 million employees, corresponding to beneficiaries of Social Security and subscribers of Caixa Geral de Aposentações. For the year 2021 as a whole, the following year-on-year rates of change were recorded: • Average gross monthly earnings per employee: +3.4%, at €1,361; • Regular earnings component: +3.1%, to €1,106; • Base monthly earnings: +3.0%, to €1,039; • The rates of change in real terms, i.e. considering the CPI, were lower than the nominal changes: 2.1%, 1.8%, and 1.7%, respectively.
