Algarve lost 1.8 million overnight stays from 2007 to 2009

Summary
Between 2005 and 2009 the Algarve presented an upward trend in overnight stays and guests until 2007, followed by a period of decline in tourist activity which has resulted in a reduction of 1.8 million overnight stays in 2009 when compared to 2007. In 2009, the Algarve accounted for 35.5% of the total of overnight stays in Portugal, of which, approximately 72% coming from a foreign market. In 2009 the net bed occupancy rate in Algarve reached 40.9%, -2.4 p.p. when compared to the previous year. The Algarve accounted for a total of 361 290 thousand Euros in income from lodging in 2009. The municipality of Albufeira concentrated more than 45% of overnight stays generated in the Algarve in 2009.
