The August 2017 unemployment rate was 8.8%, down by 0.1 percentage points (p.p.) from the previous month’s level and by 0.4 p.p. from three months before. That value corresponds to a downwards revision of 0.1 p.p. from the provisional estimate released one month ago and is the lowest observed estimate since November 2008 (8.9%).
Statistics Portugal estimates that the August unemployed population was 451.7 thousand people, having decreased by 1.5% from the previous month’s level (7.1 thousand fewer people). The employed population estimate was
4,709.5 thousand people, having increased by 0.1% (6.9 thousand more people) from the previous month’s level.
The provisional unemployment rate estimate for September 2017 was 8.6%. For this month, the provisional estimate for the unemployed population was 442.0 thousand people and that for the employed population was 4,716.7 thousand people.
