Summary

July 2023 (definitive estimates):

The active population (5,279.0 thousand people) increased from June (0.2%) and April 2023 (0.1%) and from July 2022 (1.7%) (previous month, three months before and a year earlier, respectively).

Similarly, the employed population (4,945.1 thousand) also increased from the three periods under comparison: 0.2%, 0.3% and 1.3%, respectively.

The unemployed population (333.9 thousand) remained practically unchanged from the previous month, having decreased from three months before (3.3%) and increased from a year earlier (7.9%).

The unemployment rate stood at 6.3%, the same value as in the previous month, down 0.2 percentage points (pp) from three months before and up 0.3 pp from a year earlier.

The inactive population (2,410.8 thousand) decreased from the three periods under comparison: 0.4%, 0.1% and 2.4%, respectively.

The labour underutilisation rate was estimated at 11.6%, down 0.1 pp from the previous month and 0.2 pp from three months before and remaining unchanged from one year earlier.

August 2023 (provisional estimates):

The active population (5,274.6 thousand) decreased 0.1% both from July and May 2023, having increased by 1.5% from August 2022.

The employed population (4,948.0 thousand) increased by 0.1% both from the previous month and from three months before and by 1.3% from a year earlier.

The unemployed population (326.7 thousand) decreased from July (2.2%) and May 2023 (3.4%), having increased from August 2022 (3.9%).

Similarly, the unemployment rate, that stood at 6.2%, has also registered a decrease from July and May 2023 (0.1 pp and 0.2 pp, respectively) and an increase from August 2022 (0.2 pp).

The inactive population (2,414.8 thousand) increased from the previous month (0.2%) and from three months before (0.3%), having decreased from one year earlier (1.9 pp).

The labour underutilisation rate stood at 11.5%, down 0.1 pp from the previous month and 0.2 pp from three months before, having remained unchanged from the same month of 2022.
