FISHANDAQUACULTUREPROCESSING INDUSTRY
In 2010 industrial production of fishery and aquaculture rose by 6%, with 225 thousand tons produced.
Frozen products showed the biggest quantity in total production, and reinforced their position by growing
11.3%, towards to 2009.
INTERNATIONALTRADE
In 2011 imports reached 1471 million Euros, corresponding to an increase of 7.7% when compared with 2010.
Frozen fish remained the most important trade product, both in quantity and value.
Spain is the main country of origin of frozen fish (51%), fresh and chilled fish (59.1%) and molluscs fresh,
chilled and frozen (51.8%). Sweden is the main provider of salted, smoked and dried fish.
Spain is also the main destination market of national fish products, concerning frozen, fresh and chilled,
crustaceans and molluscs. Brazil is the main destiny of smoked and dried products, while France and UK are
the most important destination markets for frozen and canned fish.
In 2011 international trade balance of the fishery activity had a deficit of 668 827 thousand Euros, which
was 12 504 thousand Euros wider than in 2010. The coverage rate of 54.5% represented an improvement
of 2.6 p.p. when compared with the previous year.
FISHERYECONOMY
The Fisheries operational program 2007-2013 (PROMAR) execution rate was 41% of the forecasted European
Fisheries Fund (EFF) endowment, and the executed investment was 45% of the total forecasted investment.
This rate shows the execution of projects supported by Axe 1 - Adaptation of fishery effort (57%/66%), Axe 2 -
Investment in aquaculture, transformation and commercialization of products of fishery and aquaculture (37%/
51%), Axe 3 - General interest measures (34%/36%) and Axe 4 - Sustainable development of fishing zones
(2%/3%).
To the program’s execution has also contributed Axe 5 –”Technical Assistance”, with an execution rate of 25%
of the forecasted EFF, and an executed expense of 26%.
Gross value added in the fishery and aquaculture branch in 2009 was EUR 376 million, the lowest value since
year 2006. This sharp decrease was mainly due to the reduction of catches and landings of fish and molluscs.
MAINSTOCKSANDRESOURCESEXPLOITATION LEVELS
Total admissible capture level (TAC) for hake increased by 15% when compared with 2010.
Monkfish quota increased by 5%.
Quota for Blue Whiting had a reduction of 90%.
Total fishery possibilities in EU waters dropped 7% towards to 2010.
