SUMMARY
The purpose of this publication is to give an overview of the fisheries mostly, for the year 2011 as well as for
some branches of national economy related to this sector.
It includes data related to the landings of fresh and chilled fishery products by ports, species and NUTS II,
market and structures, the fishery activity, the number of fishery workers, the fish and aquaculture processing
industry, the international trade and fish stocks.
The structure of this publication enables an easier approach of the statistical data, including brief analysis of
the several themes.
FISHERYPOPULATION, ONTHE JOBACCIDENTSANDTRAINING
The number of registered fishermen dropped by 3.1% in 2011, especially in the polyvalent segment and inland
water activities.
Most of registered fishermen (61%) are aged between 35 and 54 years old.
On the job accidents rate in fishery activity is lower in number of deaths (-7 mortal victims) but had a greater
number of injured people and higher average number of days per accident.
In the Mainland 217 training actions occurred, involving 3 457 trainees, with a success rate of 84%.
A total of 526 new professionals were able to exercise the fishery activity in 2011.
FISHERYSTRUCTURES
In 2011, 4 866 fishing vessels were authorized to operate.
The number of fishing licenses in 2011 decreased by 4%, with a total of 20 834, representing an average of
4 arts per vessel.
The fishing fleet lost 68 vessels in 2011.
FISHERYPRODUCTSMARKETANDORGANIZATIONALSTRUCTURES
The number of fishing vessels associated with Producer’s Organizations increased, reaching 1 712 units, 35%
of the total licensed fleet.
Around 96% of sardine landings in national ports were carried out by vessels associated with Producer’s
Organizations.
LANDINGSANDCATCHES
Fishery production decreased in 2011 (-2.6%), mitigated by greater catches in external waters (+6.8%).
Fresh and chilled fishery catches decreased in quantity (-1.2%) but increased their value by 5.1%.
Catches of octopus and tuna had significant drops (-31.9% e -24.3%, respectively).
The ports of the Centre region concentrated the majority of the quantity (29.8%) and value (28.8%) of annual
catches.
AQUACULTUREANDSEASALTPRODUCTION
In 2010 aquaculture activity produced about 8 thousand tonnes of fish. The total value was 46 462 thousand
Euros, 5% higher than the value registered in 2009.
There were 1 561 licensed establishments for this activity, 89% being bottom culture for mollusc production.
In 2011, 48 thousand tonnes of sea salt were produced, plus 8% than in 2010, mainly in theAlgarve region (94%).
