Enterprises in Portugal - 2008

Summary

This publication presents the main findings of the Portuguese business sector. For the first time, data is presented according to the new version of classification of economic activities (NACE Rev.2). To enable comparability over time data for 2007 are also published.


The main findings for the years 2007-2008 are the following:
1.In 2008, the business sector comprised 1,121,472 enterprises, of which 1,096,255 were from the non financial sector;


2.Employment for the business sector was composed by 3,977,256 persons employed (of which 97.1% were from non financial sector), corresponding to an increase of 1.1% comparing to 2007;


3.Turnover increased 5.2% for the business sector, comparing to 2007, largely due to the contribution of the financial sector, which presented an increase rate of 17.6% for this variable;


4.Individual enterprises, representing almost 68% of the total number, registered a negative rate in all main indicators: number of enterprises (-0.8%); persons employed (-1.7%); turnover (-4.6%) and gross value added (GVA) at current prices (-3.3%);


5.In the non financial business sector, Trade is the activity that concentrates the highest number of enterprises (24.3%) and of persons employed (21.5%), as well as the major contribution for the total turnover (37.7%). Concerning GVA at current prices, Manufacturing activities stands out, with a share of 22%.
