The Portuguese Classification of Economic Activities – Revision 4 (CAE-Rev.4) establishes the mandatory common framework for the classification of economic activities to be adopted at national level from 1 January 2025.

The objectives of using CAE-Rev.4 include:

• classifying statistical units producing goods and services (whether profit-making or not) according to their economic activity;

• grouping and organising statistical information in a coordinated and systematic manner, by economic activity, across various sectors (production, employment, energy, investment, etc.);

• enabling statistical comparability at national, EU and global levels.

The changes compared to the previous version (CAE-Rev.3) allow for an organisation of economic and social statistical information that is better suited to the current national economic reality, as well as reflecting the latest structural, scientific and technological developments and harmonisation with the corresponding European (NACE Rev. 2.1) and United Nations (ISIC/CITA-Rev.5) classifications.
